~ Artist Spotlight ~

Hot on the heals of a new release,
the DTB will fill the rare Mountain Jam
air with some glorious jams
for their first time!

The Derek Trucks Band...

has been a work in progress for over 10 years, blending jazz, rock, blues, Latin, Eastern Indian, and other world music into the sound that now defines the DTB. The band’s mission has been to assemble a group of musicians that share a passion for improvisation and musical exploration, and to develop a united musical vision by performing with this core group of players for an extended period of time. The focus of the band is on the art form itself, despite the current trend of image-driven music on the scene today. The DTB aims to create progressive roots music in an effort to move the art form forward and re establish substance over hype. Following is a brief history of the band, and the diverse background of the musicians that make up the DTB.

Derek Truck's musical career began at the age of nine, when he picked up a five dollar acoustic guitar at a yard sale. "It was nothing special," he claims, “It was just the only thing that looked interesting." But that seemingly inconsequential purchase changed his life. After learning what he could from his father and a family friend, Derek began playing with other musicians around town. "It happened pretty quick," Derek remembers. Within the span of a single year, he had purchased an instrument, learned how to play, and began touring - with his father acting as road manager/chaperone. What had begun as a weekend activity quickly became a life’s pursuit, and would eventually result in Derek being the youngest player to make Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" list.

Derek on the new album:
"I'm excited about it. This one feels different than the others. I think part of it is that when you build a studio yourself from the ground up with your own hands, with family, you feel like you birthed the whole thing. It's in our backyard, it just feels organic. It was nice to be able to wake up in the morning and drive the kids to school and hit the studio and write."

Artist Spotlight ~ The Hold Steady

Making their Mountain Jam debut this year will be Brooklyn's own The Hold Steady. Taking the country by storm are Craig Finn (vocals, guitar), Tad Kubler (lead guitar), Franz Nicolay (keyboards, vocals, harmonica, accordion), Galen Polivka (bass) and Bobby Drake (drums). The band's style has been described as a "riff-heavy mixture of classic rock", notable for its "lyrically dense storytelling." To date, the band has released four critically acclaimed studio albums: Almost Killed Me (2004), Separation Sunday (2005), Boys and Girls in America (2006), and Stay Positive (2008).

With Stay Positive on the Billboard Charts, The Hold Steady abandon their day jobs and light out for the territories. But roaming that ribbon of highway isn’t all autographs and beer nuts. Here’s a rock and roll group grappling with their success, always on the brink of collapse – in love with the road, but praying to make it home in one piece.”

The Hold Steady have announced an April 7 release date for A Positive Rage, a double disc package featuring a documentary on DVD and their first-ever live album.
